Happy Birthday to yoooooooooooooou.
Today is my baby sister's 23rd birthday.

Here is a picture of baby Heather being fed by my mom, while Jeremiah (yes, my husband) climbs up on the table.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 242px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiEydZrcPqKB5w3bcZW8nS32Yl9fiFuvlgWGGyrcgV8lQQImjPZuMXPZPayXgqzzvrm5xNhyZ04kLfBerqyE8eGlXqB6DawMrkV4qb8_XhVOn5xpeCHnZ6UrzPpDvbtxy-noUWwBG2RbiU/s320/heathandjeremiah.jpg.jpeg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5309884935825163330" />

Isn't that so cute.
Bad quality, sorry. The photo was in rough shape.

One of my favorite stories about Heather as a baby is actually about her and my brother Ryan.
When Ryan and Heather were little, Ryan used to climb into her crib and pull down all the stuffed animals (and we're talking 30) into the crib so that they were surrounded.
Later on, my mum or I would go in and find them both asleep in crib buried under all of the animals.
One of my other favorites takes place in a department store.
My mom had Heather and I with her while she did some shopping. Heather was about 5 so I was 9.5. My mom was looking through the racks and I was helping her look. Suddenly we couldn't find Heather.
My mom started panic while we looked around everywhere trying to shout her name without alarming too many people.
All of the sudden little tiny Heather emerges from the inside of one of those racks. Her eyes looked especially large and all of her hair was either plastered to her head or standing on end from the static electricity.
She looked at us both and said, "Hi Mum," in this tiny little voice.
She looked so cute and funny that my mom couldn't even be mad with her.
We were both so relieved to have found her anyway.
I think that my mom took us for ice cream at Brigham's after that.

This is a picture of us at Christmas. I think it was Christmas 88. Heather was 2 almost 3 at the time.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 304px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjkuQWA7j9qgODmac3pWYFnyfvjvnMIvdBSwAZeu6ptPhTyUC4yf-b-NmzxS5gzAfbt5vf-SOtafUAxhsm6NhxF_3feiTrFLJ7Lfx2VyIqY0xjNww8xAd87PPJ8cEhBGtpLcTJdqLpjVPI/s320/heather.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5309886391083153602" />

This is Heather (on the left), my other sister Coleen (middle), and I at Christmas a few years ago.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 275px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiltDENaPOkm-ZnJZ2W035cz45_ywKeENi5UEJ-axIdWBavRje61PpLkH6V3pfgA7Lm9xNRPQEkh3blfAH3JndrAZSqZKFPQXX1S79-ibttnRdRJ7vAx0rikwRElSyk3FoWCR3hwXjkCg0/s320/sisters.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5309886951260465426" />

Happy Birthday Heather! I can hardly refer to this website as a blog, it's more like a venue for posting my favorite YouTube videos. This is a really busy time of year for me at school. My AP Biology class takes their AP Exam May 12th. I've been working since September to teach them everything from basic chemistry (Hydrogen Atoms, Carbon molecules, electronegativity, etc.) to Ecology (how all organisms interact with one another and every abiotic element of the biosphere).
It's a lot of information and I get really stressed out about it.
I love biology so much, that I want the time to teach these girls everything all of these topics (well everything that I know about them at least).
I want them to be able to research exactly how the endocrine system works, to be able to make a model of the cell, and to be able to get outside and see many of these living creatures for themselves.
Unfortunately, there just isn't enough time to do it all, so I find myself sitting and thinking about what to teach and how to teach it in the most efficient manner.

For example, here is one of my more recent stream of conscience: "hmmm, scrap Drosophila lab, no fruit fly breedings, just computer-simulated, we'll get algae samples once the weather is warmer, ....what seeds for what plants should they grow? yes, they can grow, measure, observe their own plants, should they read that peer-reviewed paper on the population dynamics of algae in lake carango, they need to know phylogenetics, and they can review nucleic acid probe and polymerase chain reaction analyses.....hmmm yes. that's good, they can correct one another's bacterial transformation lab and hopefully make PowerPoints on all the major systems, except i'm going to have to teach them the endocrine system, and probably excretory....and respiratory... oh jeez and circulatory. forget it i'll teach it. tomorrow we'll do mosses, ferns, and other non-vascular plants."

Yeah. So basically my brain is constantly cluttered with teaching strategies for covering every topic related to the "study of life".
We're going to be getting into animals and animal behavior soon and there are a few YouTube movies that I like to show.
Evolutionarily speaking (micro not macro) there is really no incentive for any type of altruistic behavior in the animal kingdom. It is an eat or be eaten type of world. Animals automatically act in an economic fashion...and they are wild animals that act on instinct.
But sometimes, we see behavior that is just amazing.
Like animals teaming up to save one of their own, or even another.
Or animals forming relationships with humans, reported instances of wolves actually nursing human babies.
And my favorite, examples of animals relating with other animals.
Here are some examples:

The Battle at Kruger

Christian the Lion (from the movie Born Free)

Polar Bear and Husky

This is my AP Bio class at the Boston Regional Brain Bee.
They are really cute, very sweet, and they make me smile on a routine basis.
The class is actually 19, but only 12 participated in the Brain Bee since it was during February vacation. I also teach 65 freshmen biology students.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiiAenremMpEk6uE0HQX-XnL5pWdvGD00O0CCjPS8nefL-KeYwOh3CwoE9KSNyZKw_4Bgxz0mb1lXUulJFBHTF5t4NadQ8qEyiSzbppJk1LGQICcZNqul8DWYiWiRROGpnzLbpqutj5_Mg/s320/brainbee+029.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5308676656444487474" />Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8225877822760085094.post-45042982825952227942009-02-28T06:18:00.000-08:002009-02-28T06:19:47.767-08:00Frostie the dancing bird, it's funnier than it soundsUnknownnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8225877822760085094.post-29117269174459318082009-02-24T14:44:00.000-08:002009-02-26T10:14:36.317-08:00You're invited to the Aarti Paarti!Have you seen my fabulous sister-in-law's cooking show?!!!? Jeremiah does it all.

Anyways, Zucca loves the snow. The too live in DC.
Mike is an old friend from high school with whom I reconnected at my friend Laura's wedding this summer.
He and Jeremiah bonded over banjo-talk and I had the pleasure of getting to know Mike's special California gal, Suz.
Like Mike, she is adorable.
Mike and Suzi were our first official house guests following mine and Jeremiah's wedding.
They visited early in November and came over for a night of pizza and red wine. This was pre-engagement.
Anyways. I have to dig up a picture of those two so you can see that lovely couple.

Congratulations and best wishes to both couples.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8225877822760085094.post-19289089825110774772009-01-16T08:30:00.000-08:002009-01-16T08:56:48.097-08:00Homemade hatAfter scouring the internet for the perfect little hat to make for my friend Jenn's son Evan

I finally settled on this little knit hat.
Unfortunately the hat seemed small and shapeless so I added the brown crochet edge to neaten it up and to give it some integrity.

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiX5F95eYTwNfwPWkw-rAWYS2E30CgHtgHrc2-AYxS_bp7kNhByFqbFcxK595M0zdi0_2uYkO67FK-x91l__zz7PvKXO2riMnpnINk9QYsqZEmivrtpW8_7qc_Grgn4RV7dgCJUeHOQnAs/s320/P1030097.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5291930840228730146" />

I hope that Jenn receives the hat in the mail before she sees this post.

I am working on a baby blanket right now for one of my other friends.
Hello folks,
Sorry about the bad blogging.
I was distracted/busy/sick/relaxing.
Anyways, married life has been a blast.
There's nothing quite like coming home to your best bud everyday, especially when he is so stinkin' funny.

Over the break my sister and her boyfriend, Brian, introduced me to Guitar Hero.

They came over and we had homemade sushi.
Jeremiah's aunt Sabrina had given us a "make your own sushi" basket as a wedding present, complete with everything we could possibly need for a sushi feast (ingredients included).
We've made it 3 times now and I dare say that we are pretty good now.
Heather and Brian, what do you think?

Heather and Brian are brave. This was their second time coming over for dinner. They shared Thanksgiving with us too and here are some pictures from that day.
I brined the turkey in a contractor's bucket.
We also carved the turkey with one of Jed's fixedblade Benchmade knives.

They made me eat, sleep, enjoy myself, and laugh. They provided me with food, rides, alcohol, jokes, and didn't even get mad at me when I locked my keys in the house.
They have all been very dear friends to me throughout the course of our friendships, but during those few days when I really needed an entourage of ladies to help me accomplish the long list of things to do as well as relax, they were there for me.

I am so very grateful for them. Even though I always knew them as people who loved me and would be there for me when I needed them, to have them there by my side during the days leading up to my wedding was so amazing.
Girlfriends are the best.

Since I'm writing about girlfriends, it's only fair that I mention Jennifer Tessneer who read a lovely passage by Thomas Kemper. Here she is with her son Evan.
<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjmouAQ-BSQy9fKyInp6GRmmKkjiPwQnFmALSmOS2VMdo9WJWObKMC19r8xwSL03M2V_L1K-m9ku9LCfqh0E2tckbVsIzO0TbQEqTWqrDAoCi-1ePIzTvfqNw-61CpoylBtDLyLih2ojgc/s320/august2008+022.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5263482255277092002" />

Isn't she beautiful. Jenn has been such a loving and devoted friend to me and she is just so wonderful. Like the ladies I mention above, Jenn is the type of friend who will be there for me whenever I need her, will tell me the truth, but also offer me love and support regardless of what that truth is. She's an inspirational woman and I adore her.

I would also really like to mention my darling friend Jess Tabak. She and her guy, Ty just got engaged yesterday and I am so very happy for them. They are a great couple and I am ecstatic that they have decided to "tie the knot".
Jess is a loving and supportive friend as well. She has repeatedly offered me an ear and honest, sound advice. I dare say that Rachel made Jeremiah and I look the best that we've every looked, although the sun and the beautiful foliage in the background didn't hurt either.

Anyways, once I have her pics I'll post some of them, but feast your eyes on these in the meantime.

<img style="display:block; I don't want them to get to long, because Admissions Officers read tons of them and the longer they get, the less the must pay attention to them. But, they have to be chock full of flattering remarks that makes it sounds like I really know these students and admire their character and academic motivations.

Any suggestions for attacking these?
I wish my friend Jess could write them, because she is one of the best writers/editors I've encountered and I could just dictate a few things to her and admissions committees would admit all these kids just because they know someone who could write as well as she does.

To amuse myself while writing these stupid things I will be listening to The Fleet Foxes.

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8225877822760085094.post-72900539909545232732008-08-01T17:46:00.000-07:002008-08-01T17:54:38.491-07:00Commenting on my blogHey all,
Many of you have communicated that you would like to "comment" on my blog, but can't figure out how.
Well, here are some simple instructions for you.

1. They played everything from Whitney Houston to Fat Man Scoop and Faith Evans.
The dancing was great and I was able to re-connect with some high school folks.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8225877822760085094.post-62600716343680215552008-07-22T07:51:00.001-07:002008-07-22T09:43:14.465-07:00News<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjp_CkdH-hkS8luJN6lNTaAABy2ykp-KnUSZF8D6BXQ0t86Kq_cuWD77HjRR-hwuyBWA9GpyC1Dbb1AiDR5BFfELNT3NJr-DQ65HKPUYSx-BI9CWPwpC0up40TdHQf78y5iov2ANZhaAIU/s320/SandJpics+504.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5225852496930089730" />

Many of you have already heard that I am engaged to my sweetheart, Jeremiah Smith.
And many of you have met him, so that saves me writing an entire blog introducing him. Upon my move back to Massachusetts I was not in the best of places. I had been in graduate school at the U of Arizona in Tucson. Tucson had its bright moments, but there many disappointments and heartaches there as well.
I really felt like God was telling me to go home to Massachusetts, but at 25 I had a hard time believing that going back to Mass (a state that I really don't like) where I had absolutely no prospects and would have to live at my parents' house was the best thing to do.

I pretty much sat on a couch for 2 weeks and thought, prayed, and agonized about my decision to move home...and then my Dad flew out to Tucson and he, Zucca, and I drove back home.
It was a truly humbling experience.
I just felt like the Lord was telling me to go, and to trust him regardless of how bleak the future looked, much like Abraham had to do.
I'm really grateful for my dad coming out to rescue me.
I had developed into someone who wasn't very good at asking for help, couldn't be vulnerable and when I was completely broken, my father stepped in and was strong for me.
And even though my mom didn't come to Arizona, she was at home praying for us and holding down the fort while waiting for me to come home.

The first few months were rocky. I didn't do much but sleep, eat, pray, and watch Law and Order...the original not SVU or CIS.
I think I developed a bit of a crush on Jerry Orbach, I'm not gonna lie.

In addition to watching Law and Order, which is very therapeutic, I started to attend a women's Bible Study with my mum at my very dear friend Jean Bishop's home.

Throughout the next few months I started to get my bearings and God really blessed me with friends and encouragement. I interviewed for and accepted a job teaching at my high school, Notre Dame Academy.
I now teach there as an AP Biology, Biology, and Chemistry teacher.

And then, and then came Jeremiah.
(look at his fantastic face)
<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgGPCjIyV-RLZlAvs-fWpMyWyzLa_QIwmgE5PslAi7TYOg8_PGnKGmCYgQ9p2magWBjYfC6mMjV0IjZsr0lRO0tsPQJxR0_V4PyUQ7-I5Ng0Qeh5DZaeTacppoIXchRX1BxlrfZor20GoM/s320/SandJpics+734.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5225857523714635202" />

When I first moved home I wasn't interested in socializing at all, but after a few months I wrote him and email because I knew he was living in Mass and he always seemed like a lot fun. Over the past few years I had spent time with him and Ry, and the two of them cracked me up, more than I as the cool older sister, would have admitted.
We played phone tag for awhile and eventually got together so that he could give me a guitar. Both of us are passionate about all things music, so we had much to talk about.
Because I was just going to over to see Jeremy, who I had know forever, I didn't do anything about my appearance. I planned on being there long enough to get the guitar and then leave.
Well 4hours later we had laughed so much, eaten Thai food, and I had succeeded in stringing the guitar incorrectly a bunch of times.
From there we hung out intermittently. Once we even had a long discussion about how much he loved being single and about how I was never going to get married.

Angie, one of the women from my Bible study emailed me one day and told me that she had found this great single Christian guy for me.
Coincidentally, it was Jeremiah.
And it was about that time that everything changed.
I will spare you the intricate details of how everything changed. It involved a lot text messaging, going to (music)shows, hiking, and driving around listening to music.

Here we are well over a year later and I am so thrilled. I never thought God could have made my trip back to Massachusetts so rewarding.
I have a great job, spent a year laughing with my dad and driving my mother crazy with my messiness (just kidding mum), found a fantastic Christian man who was so obviously made for me.

Song of Solomon urges its readers, "Young women of Jerusalem, swear to me that you will not awaken love or arouse love before its proper time!" Song of Solomon 8:4

A lot easier said than done.

We live in a world where sex is glorified as the end all be all of existence.
As women, being loved and cherished is so important to us, and if we don't feel as though our needs for these things are being fulfilled, we seek out that fulfillment in romantic relationships.

But Isaiah 54:9 says, "For your Maker is your husband- the Lord Almighty is his name-."
God has designed us to yes, yearn for love from a man and to want relationship with him. We were made to be man's helper and he our protector.

But there's only room for one God in our lives.
By seeking him first above all things, we are strong in him and the knowledge that we can never earn his love.
Filled with God's love and the knowledge that he made us in his image, we can then appreciate the imperfect humans in our lives. Rather than fixating on what it is we want them to do for us, we can determine to serve them and honor God through our relationships with all of our friends and family.
Then we can just love them and appreciate them for who they are and what they bring to our lives.
<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEid4OwdMDoh6U-ee22iwJr0nnG3dnoA8p9keOxMkNfiqTsb9oJi69RjP8MjP-I1ckLHYjcB8IXjL_xSLbeFoJFA0xlFyX8jpzjfQDPOkeaLGdWH9nGbNqVKYYZIEV_daSxGriw5R7C-eWA/s320/SandJpics+661.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5225879772720120226" />

Because I have learned to give God the number one role in my life, I wasn't looking to be fulfilled by another person.
Instead I was just content to find a companion, a partner who loves the Lord and also wants to honor him as we make our way through this life.
I would venture to say that Jeremiah is perfect for me. We laugh all the time.
Even our arguments serve as fodder for inside jokes later.
He understands the good things and the annoying things about me.
He considers it his task to honor and love me as Christ loved the church.(Ephesians)
He also is pretty long-winded in his writing, so he will understand why this Blog post is so long, and he might even read the entire thing.
<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhxx5rkWlr2ng1VpgJHs1NOEA-5pei1x2gatE6c2kCErY3b8jdGr4bC6pLGVbAVOZUe9qMAULhd9X-n0WeXDI_9b4HVUvdo71xZQYH3V89O3wUbmwEkOLpRGWjCB31sZbTqiWcEaz9_waU/s320/SandJpics+623.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5225875639982409874" />

I know from the bottom of my heart that the blessing that is Jeremiah in my life is the result of prayer, trust, and prioritizing God.
God has guided us every step of the way, helped us to honor him and one another in our relationship, and he will be with us in the future as we prepare to spend the rest of our time on earth together.

Well, that's the long version of "us".
Crazy.

We are getting married on October 11, 2008.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com3
